Buys Billets & Blooms, Slabs, Cold Rolled, Coal +8
Pickled hot rolled coil reduced further in thickness at room temperature, then annealed and skin-passed to give thin, flat steel with a smooth surface, close tolerances and good formability. Cold rolled coil (CRC) is the material of appliances, furniture, drums and car bodies, and the substrate for most galvanized, tinplated and pre-painted steel.
Cold rolling starts with hot rolled coil that has been pickled to remove its scale. A tandem or reversing cold mill then reduces it by 50–90 % without heating, to as thin as 0.15 mm. The work hardens the steel, so the coil coming off the mill — 'full hard' — is stiff and brittle; it is either sold as such (for galvanizing lines that anneal in-line, or for roofing sheet where formability does not matter) or annealed to restore ductility, in batch furnaces or on a continuous annealing line, and finally given a light skin-pass rolling that sets the surface texture and removes the yield point.
The result is thinner, flatter and dimensionally more exact than hot rolled sheet, with a clean metallic surface that takes paint, enamel and coatings well. The trade name CRCA — cold rolled, close annealed — is common in India and the Gulf for annealed cold rolled sheet.
Grades are set by formability. EN 10130 runs from DC01 (commercial bending and simple forming) through DC03 and DC04 (drawing and deep drawing) to DC05, DC06 and DC07 (extra-deep drawing, interstitial-free). The equivalent families are SPCC to SPCG in JIS G3141 and CS, DS, DDS and EDDS in ASTM A1008. Higher-strength micro-alloyed grades (EN 10268 HC260LA–HC420LA) and dual-phase steels are used where weight must be saved, mainly in vehicles.
In the Middle East cold rolled coil is used by appliance, furniture, panel, drum and light tube makers, and in much larger volume as the feed for the region's galvanizing and colour-coating lines, which make roofing and cladding sheet. Cold rolling capacity exists in Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Iran, and imports come mainly from China, India, Korea, Japan and Turkey. MESteel publishes a weekly CRC CFR UAE price and a monthly Middle East import price for 1 mm CRC.
Cold rolled products are ordered by thickness × width, in coil or cut length, and by surface: matt (the normal skin-passed finish) or bright, and for exposed parts the surface quality (EN 10130 A or B). Thin sheet is still often quoted in gauge numbers; the gauge table below converts them to millimetres.
A 1 mm sheet weighs 7.85 kg/m². For sheets per tonne use the table on the hot rolled coils page, which applies equally to cold rolled sheet, or the steel weight calculator.
