Cold rolled steel strip coated with pure zinc by electroplating instead of dipping. The coating is thin, very even and does not change the steel's properties, so electro-galvanized (EG) sheet keeps the formability and surface of cold rolled sheet; it is used for appliance casings, computer and electrical enclosures, and painted car parts.
In an electro-galvanizing line the cleaned cold rolled strip passes between anodes in a zinc sulphate or chloride electrolyte, and zinc is deposited on it by electric current. Coating thickness is set by current and line speed, very precisely, and each side can be coated differently or not at all. Because the strip stays near room temperature, the annealed cold rolled substrate keeps its mechanical properties exactly.
Compared with hot-dip galvanizing the coating is much thinner — usually 2.5–7.5 µm per side against about 20 µm for Z275 — so EG sheet is chosen for surface quality, paintability and formability rather than outdoor corrosion life. The surface is smooth and spangle-free, ideal for painting and powder coating. Most EG sheet is phosphated, chromate-free passivated or given an anti-fingerprint film so that it can be used bare in indoor equipment.
Zinc-nickel electroplated sheet (EN 10271) is a related product with higher corrosion resistance per micrometre.
In the Middle East EG sheet is imported, mainly from Japan, Korea, China and Taiwan, for appliance, switchgear, panel-board and furniture makers. It is costlier per tonne than hot-dip GI of the same thickness.
The coating is specified per side in EN 10152 — ZE50/50 is 5 µm on each side — or as a coating mass per side in g/m² in ASTM and JIS documents. One-side coated sheet (ZE50/00) is used where the other side is welded or painted.
