Buys Scrap, Galvannealed, Hot Dip Galvanized, Pre-Painted +2
Metallic-coated steel coil — usually galvanized (PPGI) or aluminium-zinc coated (PPGL) — that is cleaned, pre-treated, primed and painted on a continuous coil-coating line before it is formed. Pre-painted steel is the skin of most industrial and commercial buildings in the Middle East: roof and wall sheets, sandwich panel faces, rolling shutters, cold stores and appliances.
On a coil-coating line the metallic-coated strip is unwound, cleaned, given a chemical conversion coating that bonds the paint to the zinc, and then roll-coated with primer on both sides, cured in an oven for 20–60 seconds, roll-coated again with the finish coat and back coat, cured again, cooled and recoiled. Lines run at up to about 150–200 m/min. Because the paint is applied flat, under controlled conditions, it is far more uniform and better adhered than paint applied after fabrication, and the formed product needs no further painting.
The paint system is chosen for the exposure. Polyester (PE, typically 20–25 µm top coat) is the economical general-purpose finish; silicon-modified polyester (SMP) and high-durability polyester (HDP) hold their colour and gloss longer under sunlight; PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) is the premium finish for architectural cladding where colour must last decades; PVC plastisol (100–200 µm) gives a thick, tough film for aggressive industrial or coastal environments. The underside usually carries a thinner back coat of 5–12 µm. In the Gulf, high UV and heat favour SMP, HDP or PVDF for exposed walls and roofs, and lighter colours.
The substrate matters as much as the paint: corrosion of pre-painted sheet starts at cut edges and scratches, and it is the metallic coating under the paint that limits it. Galvanized substrates (PPGI) are typically Z100–Z275; aluminium-zinc substrates (PPGL, AZ100–AZ150) last longer in coastal climates. The steel grade is chosen by the forming: S550GD full-hard for roof sheet, DX51D for general forming, S280GD–S350GD for structural profiles.
The GCC has several coil-coating lines, many attached to galvanizing plants, and imports large tonnages of PPGI and PPGL from China, Korea, India, Vietnam and Turkey. MESteel publishes a monthly PPGI coil price, 0.35 mm, the most traded roofing thickness.
A pre-painted coil is fully described by substrate (grade, thickness, metallic coating), paint system and thickness on the top and the back, colour, gloss and any film or embossing. Most roofing and cladding is roll-formed from it into corrugated or trapezoidal sheet and into the faces of sandwich panels.
