Buys Hot Rolled Coils
Paint systems that protect steel from corrosion — and, as intumescent coatings, from fire — built up from a primer, intermediate coats and a topcoat applied to a blast-cleaned surface. The system is chosen for the corrosivity of the environment and the years of protection required, and in the hot, humid and saline Gulf climate it decides how long steelwork lasts.
A protective coating system works by barrier, by inhibition, or — with zinc-rich primers — by sacrificial (galvanic) protection, the zinc corroding in place of the steel at any damage. A typical heavy-duty system is a zinc-rich primer, one or two epoxy intermediate coats that build thickness and barrier, and a polyurethane or polysiloxane topcoat that resists sunlight and keeps its colour. Hot-dip galvanizing followed by paint — a duplex system — gives the longest life of all.
ISO 12944 is the reference everywhere. It classifies the atmosphere from C1 (very low corrosivity) to C5 (very high) and CX (extreme, offshore and some industrial sites), and immersion as Im1–Im4; it sets durability ranges — low, medium, high and very high (over 25 years to first major maintenance); and it gives example systems with their dry film thickness for each combination. A specification therefore reads, for example, 'C5, durability H', and a coating maker proposes a qualified system.
Most coating failures start with the surface, not the paint. Steel is blast-cleaned to a visual standard — usually Sa 2½ (very thorough blast cleaning) to ISO 8501-1 — with an anchor profile of about 50–85 µm, free of dust and soluble salts, and coated before it rusts again. Dry film thickness is measured coat by coat, and adhesion and holidays checked on critical work.
Much of the GCC coastline and its industrial zones fall into C4, C5 or CX, with high temperatures, humidity, airborne chlorides and strong UV, so the region specifies thick, high-performance systems; oil and gas owners such as Saudi Aramco apply their own coating standards on top of ISO 12944. International and regional paint companies manufacture in the UAE, Saudi Arabia and elsewhere in the Gulf.
