Steel Weight Calculator — Plate, Pipe, Bar & Rebar

Work out the weight of steel plate, pipe, bar, rebar and sections, per piece and for a quantity, in metric or imperial units. Carbon steel, stainless steel and aluminium.

Shape

Rebar is carbon steel, 7,850 kg/m³.

The formulas

Weight = cross-section area × length × density. With the area in mm², the length in metres and the density in kg/m³, the weight in kilograms is area × length × density ÷ 1,000,000.

ShapeCross-section area
Plate, sheet, flat barwidth × thickness
Round bar, rebarπ × d² ÷ 4
Square barside²
Hex bar0.866 × s², s across flats
Pipeπ × t × (OD − t)
Square / rectangular tubeA × B − (A − 2t) × (B − 2t)
Anglet × (A + B − t)
Channelh × tw + 2 × (b − tw) × tf
Beam (I / H)2 × b × tf + (h − 2 × tf) × tw

Two shortcuts the trade uses, both for carbon steel: a rebar or round bar weighs d² ÷ 162 kg per metre (d in mm), and a pipe weighs (OD − t) × t × 0.02466 kg per metre. A 114.3 × 6.02 mm pipe (4-inch schedule 40) is 16.07 kg/m.
