Buys Alloy steel, Billets & Blooms, Slabs, Cold Rolled +8
Stainless steel reduced cold from hot-rolled annealed and pickled coil to thicknesses of about 0.3–6 mm, then annealed and finished. Cold-rolled sheet is the largest stainless product: kitchen and catering equipment, appliances, tanks, food and pharmaceutical plant, lifts, cladding and welded tube are all made from it.
Cold rolling takes hot-rolled annealed and pickled coil and reduces it on a reversing Sendzimir (Z-high) mill or a tandem cold mill, which gives thinner gauges, close tolerances and a smooth surface. Cold work hardens the steel, so the strip is annealed again — in an open furnace followed by pickling, giving 2D and, after a light skin pass, the familiar 2B finish; or in a protective atmosphere, giving bright annealed (BA, 2R). It can then be ground, brushed or polished to No. 3, No. 4, hairline or mirror finishes.
The finish is part of the product: 2B is the general-purpose mill finish used for tanks and fabrication; BA is reflective and used for trim and appliances; No. 4 and hairline are the brushed finishes of lift doors, kitchens and cladding; No. 8 is the mirror finish. The table of finishes below gives the EN 10088-2 codes against the ASTM A480 names. Polished sheet is normally supplied with a PVC protective film.
Prices of cold-rolled stainless follow nickel and the hot-rolled coil market plus a cold-rolling and finishing premium; 304 2B coil is the reference product in Asian trade. MESteel publishes the 304 hot-rolled coil price, which cold-rolled prices track.
The GCC imports most of its cold-rolled stainless, from China, Indonesia, India, Korea, Taiwan, Japan and Europe. Service centres in the UAE and Saudi Arabia slit, cut, polish and film-coat it for fabricators, tube mills, catering-equipment and elevator manufacturers, and for desalination and construction projects.
Cold-rolled stainless is ordered by grade, finish, thickness, width and coil weight or sheet size, edge and protective film. Thickness tolerances are in ASTM A480 and EN ISO 9445-2.
