Buys Cold Rolled, Alloy steel, Fasteners, Hot Rolled Plates +8
Cold-rolled stainless sheet given a decorative surface — mirror polish, hairline or vibration brushing, chemical etching of a pattern, embossing or stamping, or a coloured coating, most often a PVD titanium-nitride layer in gold, rose gold, bronze or black. It is used for lift interiors, wall panels, hotel and retail fit-out, signage and furniture.
Decorative stainless sheet is ordinary cold-rolled sheet — usually 304 with a 2B or BA base — finished by specialist processors. Mechanical finishes include mirror polishing (No. 8), hairline and satin brushing, vibration or swirl finishes and bead blasting. Etching uses a printed or photo-resist mask and acid to cut a pattern a few hundredths of a millimetre into the surface; embossing and stamping press a texture into the sheet, which also stiffens it and hides fingerprints and scratches.
Colour is now applied mainly by physical vapour deposition (PVD): in a vacuum chamber a thin layer of titanium nitride, titanium carbonitride or similar ceramic is deposited on the polished sheet, producing gold, rose gold, champagne, bronze, blue and black. The layer is hard and stable in light, so it needs no lacquer, but it is only as good as the polish beneath it, and it cannot be re-polished on site. An older route colours the passive film chemically (interference colour). Anti-fingerprint (AFP) clear coatings are often added over brushed and coloured sheet.
The GCC, and the UAE in particular, is a large market for decorative stainless in hotels, malls, airports, mosques and residential towers. Most coloured and patterned sheet is imported finished from China, Korea and Taiwan, while local processors polish, etch and cut sheet for fit-out contractors. For outdoor and poolside use 316 is the safer base grade; colour and pattern do not change the corrosion resistance of the steel beneath.
Decorative sheet is ordered by base grade and thickness, finish or pattern name with an approved sample, colour, coating and film.
There is no product standard for coloured or etched patterns; the base sheet is ordered to the material standards below and the finish against an approved sample.
