Stainless steel sheet or coil punched with a regular pattern of round, square, slotted or decorative holes. It is used for screening and sieving, filters and strainers, food and pharmaceutical equipment, acoustic panels, guards, stair treads and architectural façades and sunscreens, where the open area, hole size and steel grade are chosen together.
Perforated sheet is made by punching holes in sheet or coil on a multi-tool press, which punches a whole row at a time and advances the material, or on CNC turret presses and lasers for special patterns. The hole shape, size, pitch and arrangement (staggered at 60° or straight in line) fix the open area — the share of the sheet that is hole. As a rule of thumb the hole diameter should not be much smaller than the sheet thickness when punching stainless, which work-hardens and wears punches quickly.
A perforation is described by its hole shape, hole size, arrangement and pitch. ISO 7806 gives a code for these, and in German practice DIN 24041 writes them compactly — "Rv 5-8" is round 5 mm holes, staggered (versetzt), on an 8 mm pitch, and "Rg" is the straight-row version. Margins (unperforated borders), the sheet size and thickness, the steel grade and the finish are specified separately. Stainless perforated sheet is often supplied with a 2B finish and levelled after punching.
Uses range from industrial screening of minerals and grain, to filters, strainers and drum screens in water treatment and desalination intakes, to food, dairy and pharmaceutical equipment. In architecture, perforated stainless panels are used for façades, sunscreens and screening of plant rooms; in the GCC climate 316L is preferred outdoors. Perforated sheet is produced by fabricators in the region from imported sheet and coil, and imported as standard patterns.
Perforated sheet is ordered by hole shape, size, pitch and arrangement, sheet thickness and size, margins, grade and finish.
