Buys Billets & Blooms, Slabs, Cold Rolled, Coal +8
Stainless steel rolled from slabs on a hot strip mill, then annealed and pickled to a dull No. 1 (1D) finish and sold as coil or cut sheet, typically 2–12 mm thick. Most of it is re-rolled cold into thinner sheet; the rest is used directly for tanks, structures, pipe and plate parts where the rougher surface does not matter.
Stainless hot-rolled coil starts as a continuously cast slab, reheated and rolled on a hot strip mill — a Steckel mill or a continuous multi-stand mill — to a thickness of a few millimetres, and coiled. This 'black' coil is covered in oxide and is hard; it is then annealed (solution treated for austenitic grades) and pickled in acid to remove the scale and the chromium-depleted layer under it, giving the hot-rolled annealed and pickled (HRAP) product with the No. 1 or 1D finish: dull, slightly rough and non-reflective.
HRAP is the feed for cold rolling and much of it never leaves the producing group. Traded hot-rolled coil and sheet go to pipe and tube mills, tank and vessel fabricators, and industrial users who need thicknesses above the cold-rolled range. Thicker material cut from coil is often sold as plate; the finish and tolerances then follow the coil standards, not those of quarto plate.
Prices of stainless flat products are set by nickel, chromium and molybdenum as well as by steel demand, and most contracts quote the base price plus an alloy surcharge. China and Indonesia now produce more than half of the world's stainless steel, which sets the tone for Asian export prices of 304 coil. MESteel publishes monthly prices for 304 hot-rolled coil and 316L hot-rolled coil, and the stainless steel futures price traded in China.
The GCC imports all its stainless flat steel — mainly from China, Indonesia, India, Korea, Taiwan and Europe — through service centres and stockists in the UAE and Saudi Arabia that cut, slit and distribute it to pipe mills, fabricators, desalination and oil and gas contractors.
Hot-rolled stainless is ordered by grade, finish, thickness, width and coil weight, or by sheet size. Thickness tolerances for continuously hot-rolled material are in EN ISO 9444-2 and ASTM A480.
