Stainless steel plate, from about 4 mm to over 100 mm thick, rolled on a reversing quarto mill or cut from hot-rolled coil, annealed and pickled. It is the material of pressure vessels, tanks, heat exchangers, scrubbers, desalination evaporators, flanges and heavy fabrications in the chemical, oil and gas, water, pulp and paper and food industries.
Two routes make stainless plate. Quarto plate is rolled from a slab on a reversing mill to the exact thickness, width and length ordered, then solution annealed, levelled and pickled — this is the route for heavy, wide and long plates and for the special grades. Coil plate is cut from hot-rolled annealed and pickled coil, which is cheaper and flatter in the thinner sizes (roughly 4–12 mm) but limited to the coil width. Both come with a No. 1 (1D) finish; plate can also be ground or blasted.
Most stainless plate goes into pressure equipment and is ordered to ASTM A240 or ASME SA-240, or EN 10028-7 for European pressure codes, usually dual certified (304/304L, 316/316L). Dimensional tolerances for quarto plate are in EN ISO 18286 and ASTM A480; for coil plate in EN ISO 9444-2. Heavy plate is often ultrasonically tested, and duplex plate is checked for ferrite content and impact toughness, because poor heat treatment leaves harmful intermetallic phases.
Duplex 2205 and super duplex 2507 plate have roughly twice the yield strength of 316L, which allows thinner vessel walls, and resist chloride stress-corrosion cracking. Together with 316L and 904L they are the plates of desalination plants — multi-stage flash and multi-effect evaporators, seawater intake and brine equipment — that are a large part of GCC stainless demand, alongside oil, gas and petrochemical vessels.
Plate for GCC projects is imported, largely from Europe, India, China, Korea and Japan, and supplied by stockists who cut it to shapes and rings with plasma and waterjet. Many fabricators in Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Qatar roll and weld stainless plate into vessels and tanks under ASME code stamps.
Plate is ordered by grade, thickness, width, length and finish, and for pressure work by the specification and testing. The weight table below gives the mass per square metre and per plate.
