Buys Cold Rolled, Alloy steel, Hot Rolled, Angles +4
Stainless steel bars finished cold — drawn, peeled (turned), ground or polished — to tight ISO tolerances and a bright surface. They are machined into shafts, pins, valve and pump parts and fasteners with little or no stock removal, and used straight from stock for linear guides and spindles.
Bright bar starts as hot-rolled, annealed and pickled stainless bar and is finished cold in one of three ways. Drawing pulls the bar through a die, giving close size, a smooth bright surface and higher strength from cold work; it is used for smaller rounds, hexagons, squares and flats. Peeling (turning) machines off the rough surface layer of larger rounds, removing seams and decarburisation. Centreless grinding and polishing then take a drawn or peeled bar to the finest tolerances (h6–h9) and surface roughness, as needed for shafts and seals.
Bright bar is specified by an ISO tolerance class from ISO 286-2 — h9 for drawn bars, h10 or h11 for peeled bars, h6 to h8 for ground bars — and by surface roughness and straightness. Free-machining grades (303, 416) are chosen for high-volume turning on automatic lathes; 316L and duplex for corrosion resistance; 420, 431 and 17-4PH where the part must be hardened.
In the GCC, bright stainless bar is stocked for pump, valve and oilfield service workshops, food and beverage machinery and marine shafting. Pump shafts and fasteners for desalination and seawater systems are commonly made in 316L, duplex 2205 or higher alloys.
Bright bar is ordered by shape and size, grade and condition, finishing route, tolerance class, surface roughness and length. The tolerance tables below give the h classes.
