Buys Alloy steel, Cold Rolled, Hot Rolled, Stainless HR Coils +8
Hot-rolled or forged stainless steel bars of round, square, flat and hexagonal section, supplied annealed and pickled, peeled or turned. They are the stock material for machined parts, shafts, fasteners, fittings, brackets and fabrications in every grade from 304 to duplex.
Stainless bars are rolled from billets on bar mills, then solution-annealed (austenitic grades) or annealed or hardened and tempered (martensitic grades), and descaled by pickling. In that 'black' or 1D condition they carry a rough surface and the rolling tolerances; for machining they are often peeled or turned to remove the surface layer, and the most precise bars are drawn or ground as bright bar. Large rounds are forged rather than rolled.
Rounds are the bulk of the trade — the raw material for machined shafts, bolts, valve stems and fittings. Flats are used for brackets, base plates, cutlery and fabrication; hot-rolled flats have slightly rounded edges, while flats cut from plate (sometimes called sheared or cut flats) have square edges and come in widths the bar mills do not roll. Hexagons feed nut and fitting production, and squares are used for keys and machined blocks.
Two American standards are used side by side: ASTM A276 for general-purpose bars and ASTM A479 for bars for boilers and pressure vessels, which adds mechanical-property and heat-treatment requirements — oil, gas and process plant usually ask for A479. In Europe EN 10088-3 covers general purposes and EN 10272 pressure purposes.
GCC stockists hold large ranges of 304L and 316L bar for the oil and gas, desalination, food, marine and construction industries, with 2205 duplex and 17-4PH for higher-strength parts. Bar is imported, mainly from India, China, Europe and Korea.
Bar is ordered by shape and size, grade, condition and surface, and length. The steel weight calculator gives the mass of any size.
