Stainless bar grades: equivalents and uses

Standard: ASTM A276 / A582 / A564 · EN 10088-3 · JIS G4303 / G4318

Most bright stainless bar is one of a dozen grades. The choice is a trade between corrosion resistance, strength and how easily the bar machines: 303 and 416 machine fastest because of their added sulphur, but give up some corrosion resistance and weldability; 316L and duplex resist chlorides best; 420, 431 and 17-4PH can be hardened for shafts and wear parts.

Common bar grades
