Buys Seamless Pipes
Stainless steel wire drawn from wire rod to sizes from a few hundredths of a millimetre up to about 16 mm, supplied soft (annealed), part-hard or hard drawn. It goes into springs, fasteners, mesh and filters, binding and tie wire, cable armour, medical devices and wire rope.
Wire is made by pulling annealed and pickled wire rod through a series of dies, each slightly smaller than the last. Every pass work-hardens the wire, so it is either annealed between passes to keep it soft or left work-hardened to give the high strength needed for springs. Austenitic stainless steels harden quickly when drawn, which is why spring wire in 302 or 304 reaches tensile strengths of well over 2000 MPa in fine sizes.
The main product families are soft annealed wire for weaving, tying and forming; spring wire to EN 10270-3 or ASTM A313; cold heading wire for screws, rivets and bolts; welding wire; and fine and ultra-fine wire for filters, medical devices and electronics. The surface is described by the drawing lubricant — bright (wet drawn or bright annealed), matt, or with a soap or salt coating that helps later forming.
Stainless wire used in the GCC is largely imported, from Asia and Europe, by fastener makers, mesh and filter producers, and stockists supplying construction, oil and gas, and desalination plants, where 316 wire is preferred for its resistance to chlorides.
Wire is ordered by diameter, grade, condition (temper) and surface finish, and by how it is packed — coil, spool or reel — to suit the user's machines.
