Stainless steel wire, strand or small-diameter rope with an extruded plastic jacket — usually nylon (polyamide) or PVC, sometimes polyethylene, polyurethane or PTFE. The jacket protects what the wire touches, adds abrasion resistance and colour, and makes the cable pleasant to handle, while the stainless core carries the load and does not rust inside the coating.

Overview
Coated stainless wire combines two materials: a stainless steel wire, strand or rope for strength and corrosion resistance, and a thermoplastic jacket extruded over it. The jacket can be clear, so the steel shows through, or coloured, and it is sized by the finished outside diameter as well as by the core.
Nylon gives a hard, abrasion-resistant jacket suited to cables running over pulleys, as on fitness equipment, and to fishing and crafting wire. PVC is softer and cheaper and is used for garden and household wire, clothes lines, lanyards and security tethers. Polyurethane and PTFE are used where flexibility at low temperature or chemical and heat resistance matter.
A coating hides the core, which is both its weakness and its point: a broken wire inside a jacket cannot be seen. For lifting or safety-critical duties uncoated rope is normally preferred so that it can be inspected. Coated stainless cable is widely stocked by GCC rigging, hardware and fitness-equipment suppliers, mostly imported from Asia and Europe.
Forms & sizes
Coated wire is ordered by the core (grade, construction and diameter) and by the coating (material, colour and outside diameter).
Single wire
Coated monofilament, for craft, garden and tying wire
Strand
1×7 or 1×19 cores, stiff, for fishing leaders and hanging systems
Rope
7×7 and 7×19 cores, flexible, for pulley and gym cables, control cables and lanyards
Coatings
Nylon (PA), PVC, polyethylene, polyurethane, PTFE; clear or coloured
Packing
Reels of 50–1000 m, or cut assemblies with swaged ends
Standards & grades
There is no common standard for the coating itself; the core wire or rope is ordered to the standards below and the jacket by material and outside diameter.
