Steel fencing encloses and protects sites, buildings, roads and farmland. It ranges from galvanized chain link and welded mesh panels to steel palisade and high-security mesh, and a fence is a system — mesh or pales, posts, rails, fittings and gates — that is only as durable as its coating and as strong as its weakest component.
Chain link (diamond mesh) is woven from a single wire spiralled into its neighbour, so it comes in rolls that follow uneven ground and is the most economical steel fence. It is strung between tubular posts with line and tension wires or a top rail. Welded mesh panels — flat or with stiffening folds (3D), double-wire (2D) or the fine 358 security mesh — are rigid, quick to install and harder to climb. Steel palisade fencing is made of pressed steel pales bolted to angle rails and is common for industrial security.
The wire is drawn from wire rod and protected by zinc, either galvanized before the mesh is made or after; heavier zinc coatings last much longer. A polyester or PVC coat over the zinc adds colour and a second barrier against corrosion. Posts are hot-dip galvanized welded tubes or rolled sections set in concrete or bolted to base plates; fittings must be galvanized or stainless so that one rusting clip does not stain the fence.
Fences are specified by height, mesh type and size, wire diameter or gauge, coating, and the post size and spacing that suit the wind load. Security fences add anti-climb mesh, toppings of barbed or razor wire and, where required, a tested security rating.
In the GCC most fencing is galvanized and polymer-coated because of the hot, humid coastal climate, sand abrasion and salt. Chain link and welded mesh are made in the region from local wire rod and galvanized wire; specialist security systems and coated panels are also imported from Europe and Asia.
