SAE and JIS carbon steel bar grades — equivalents and carbon ranges

Standard: SAE J403 · JIS G 4051 · EN 10083-2 / EN ISO 683-1

The plain carbon steels most bright and cold-drawn bars are made from. The SAE (AISI) number gives the carbon content in hundredths of a per cent — 1045 has about 0.45% — and the JIS name says the same thing: S45C.

The ranges below are the carbon and manganese limits of the grade standards. JIS grades also limit silicon (0.15–0.35%) and SAE grades phosphorus and sulphur; check the full composition in the standard you order to. Grades with the same nominal carbon are close, not identical, so state one standard on the order.
