Buys Seamless Pipes
Steel strip hot-dip coated with an aluminium-silicon alloy (Type 1) or with almost pure aluminium (Type 2). Aluminized steel combines the strength and low cost of steel with the heat and oxidation resistance of aluminium: it is the usual material for car exhaust systems, ovens, heaters, flues and heat shields.
Aluminized steel is made on a continuous hot-dip line with a bath of molten aluminium at about 660–700 °C. Type 1, the more common, uses an aluminium bath with 5–11 % silicon, which keeps the brittle iron-aluminium layer thin and gives a formable coating; Type 2 uses commercially pure aluminium and gives a thicker coating with better atmospheric corrosion resistance, used mainly for building products.
The aluminium forms a tight oxide film that resists scaling at high temperature: Type 1 aluminized sheet keeps its surface up to about 650–700 °C, far above the limit of zinc coatings, and reflects much of the heat that falls on it. This is why it replaced plain and galvanized steel in exhaust systems, appliance cavities and heaters, and why it is often a cheaper alternative to ferritic stainless steel in such parts. At cut edges the aluminium offers less sacrificial protection than zinc, and in chloride environments the cut edges and scratches can show red rust.
Coating mass is set on both sides together: AS060 to AS150 in EN 10346, and T1-25, T1-40 or T2-65 (in hundredths of an ounce per square foot) in ASTM A463. Steel grades follow the forming needed; titanium-stabilised substrates are used for high-temperature parts. Al-Si coated boron steel is also the standard material for hot-stamped car body parts, a separate, specialised product.
In the Middle East aluminized sheet is used mainly by makers of ovens, cooking ranges, water heaters, air-conditioning parts and exhaust systems, and is imported from Asian and European mills.
Ordered by base thickness × width, steel grade, coating type and mass. The surface is a bright or matt silver, without spangle on Type 1.
