Hot rolled steel sheet, plate or coil with a pattern of raised lugs rolled into one surface by a grooved roll in the last stand of the mill. The pattern gives grip underfoot and stiffens the sheet, so chequered plate is the standard steel for floors, stair treads, walkways, ramps, vehicle decks and platforms.
Patterned plate is made on a hot strip mill or plate mill in the same way as plain sheet, except that one roll of the final stand is engraved with the pattern, so the raised relief is formed in the steel itself rather than added. Most is produced as coil and cut to sheets; heavier patterned plate is rolled on plate mills. The other side is smooth.
The common patterns are the tear-drop (lentil) and the diamond. Thickness is quoted as the base thickness, measured without the pattern; the pattern adds roughly 1–2 mm of height and some mass, so the mass per m² is higher than plain plate of the same base thickness. Aluminium tread plate, often called diamond plate or 'five-bar', is a different product used for lighter duty and decorative work.
Patterned plate is ordered in the usual structural grades — S235JR or S275JR in European practice, ASTM A36 or A1011 in American — since floors and treads are designed for load as well as grip. For outdoor use and wet areas it is usually hot-dip galvanized after cutting and welding, or painted. Where drainage or light are needed, open gratings or expanded metal are the alternatives.
In the Gulf, chequered plate is used heavily in industrial plants, oil and gas facilities, ports, warehouses and vehicle body building. It is traded as a standard stock item by steel service centres, mostly imported from China, India, Turkey and other exporters of hot rolled coil.
Order by pattern, base thickness, width and length or coil weight. Mass per m² is approximately the plain plate mass (thickness × 7.85 kg/m²) plus the pattern, which adds very roughly 2–3 kg/m² depending on the pattern and the mill — check the supplier's table if you buy by weight.
