Grey and ductile cast iron grade equivalents (EN 1561 / EN 1563, ISO, ASTM, JIS, GB)

Cast iron grades are named by their minimum tensile strength in N/mm² (and, for ductile iron, the minimum elongation in %), so a grade in one system usually has a close partner in another. The EN, ISO, JIS and GB series are built on the same metric steps and match one to one; the American ASTM classes are in thousands of psi and fall between them.

Equivalents are close, not identical: test-bar size, the place the bar is taken from and the impact-tested (RT/LT) variants differ between standards. A drawing should name one standard and grade, not 'or equivalent'.

Notes

EN 1563 also has impact-tested variants of the ferritic grades: -RT (tested at room temperature) and -LT (low temperature), for example EN-GJS-400-18-LT for parts used below freezing.
EN 1563 has added solution-strengthened ferritic grades (EN-GJS-450-18, -500-14, -600-10) that combine higher strength with high elongation; they have no direct equivalent in the older systems.
ASTM A536 grade 60-40-18 means 60 ksi (414 N/mm²) tensile, 40 ksi (276 N/mm²) yield and 18% elongation. EN-GJS-500-7 falls between 65-45-12 and 80-55-06 and has no direct ASTM partner.
The legacy page also listed withdrawn national grades of France, the UK, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, Austria, Sweden and Switzerland; all of these countries now use EN 1561 and EN 1563.
