Voestalpine and SKF collaborate on eco-friendly steel bearing prototype

SKF and Voestalpine Wire Technology have successfully developed the first prototype bearing using steel containing hydrogen direct reduced iron (H-DRI), marking a milestone in decarbonizing bearing production.

H-DRI offers a low-emission alternative to traditional iron ore-based steelmaking, crucial for sustainable steel production. The prototype, a Spherical roller bearing, was unveiled at SKF's Steyr, Austria factory, demonstrating its potential in diverse industries like marine, pulp and paper, mining, and construction.

Voestalpine Wire Technology sees this collaboration as pivotal in advancing eco-friendly steel production. By integrating green steel solutions, Voestalpine Wire Technology aims to reduce CO2 emissions, aligning with global climate goals.

SKF, meanwhile, is expanding its use of low CO2 emission steel production processes, reinforcing its commitment to initiatives like SteelZero and ResponsibleSteel to decarbonize the steel industry by 2050.
