U. S. Steel to invest USD 3 bln in new hot strip mill in Pennsylvania
U. S. Steel, a wholly owned subsidiary of Nippon Steel, plans to invest approximately USD 3 bln in a new hot strip mill at its Edgar Thomson Plant in western Pennsylvania.
The project forms part of Nippon Steel's USD 11 bln investment commitment across U. S. Steel's operations. The new mill will replace aging equipment and increase annual production capacity from approximately 2.2 mln tons to 3.5 mln tons.
The upgrade will include walking beam furnaces and an in-line slab sizing press to improve productivity, energy efficiency, yield and product quality. The increased capacity will support demand from the automotive, home appliance and energy sectors.
Construction is scheduled to begin after the necessary permits are obtained, with initial production expected in late 2029.
Nippon Steel said the investment would strengthen U. S. Steel's competitiveness in North America while supporting local employment and the development of the US steel industry.
Founded in 1901, U. S. Steel operates across the U.S. and Central Europe. Nippon Steel, Japan's largest steelmaker, completed its USD 14.9 bln acquisition of the company in June 2025.
