Swiss Steel Group plans long-term low-carbon steel partnership with Canada Nickel
Swiss Steel Group and Canada Nickel Company have signed an agreement outlining plans for a long-term partnership to supply low-carbon semi-finished steel products from Canada, with the aim of strengthening supply chains and improving production flexibility.
Under the proposed partnership, Swiss Steel Group would secure exclusive access to around 1 mln tons of billets and blooms annually from 2030. The initial supply concept has been technically validated for the group's facilities in the US, Canada, Germany, Switzerland and France, where the material would be further processed into specialty steel products.
The partnership would combine Canada's mineral resources and competitive energy supply with Swiss Steel Group's specialty steel manufacturing expertise and established European customer network. The companies will now work to develop a commercially and technically viable arrangement.
Canada Nickel is developing its Crawford Nickel project in Ontario. Through its wholly owned subsidiary NetZero Metals, it plans to process nickel concentrate and nickel-chromium magnetite concentrate into finished nickel and low-carbon, potentially net-zero-carbon, semi-finished stainless and specialty steel products.
Headquartered in Lucerne, Switzerland, Swiss Steel Group is a major producer of specialty long steel products, including structural, stainless and tool steel.
