JSW-JFE joint venture to double steelmaking capacity in Odisha
JFE Steel Corporation and JSW Steel have approved an investment to expand crude steel production capacity at their joint venture, JSW JFE Steel Limited (JJSL), in Sambalpur, Odisha, India.
The expansion will increase the plant’s annual crude steel capacity to 9.5 mln tons from 4.5 mln tons, with the new facilities scheduled to start operations in 2030. The investment will cover a blast furnace, coke oven batteries, a pellet plant, steelmaking converters, continuous casting machines and a hot strip mill, along with power generation facilities.
The project builds on the integrated steelworks joint venture announced in December 2025. The partners ultimately aim to increase JJSL’s crude steel capacity to around 15 mln tons per year.
JFE Steel expects the investment to strengthen its supply of high-value-added steel products in India, where demand is projected to grow on infrastructure investment and manufacturing expansion. The company views India as a core market for its overseas business and aims to increase overseas steel business profits as part of its long-term strategy.
JJSL is equally owned by JFE Steel and JSW Steel. Based in Sambalpur, Odisha, the company operates the former Bhushan Power & Steel plant. It supplies flat and long steel products to India's automotive, infrastructure and capital goods sectors.
