ArcelorMittal completes first phase of carbon capture trial in Ghent

ArcelorMittal has successfully captured more than 90pct of CO2 from blast furnace gas at its Ghent steelworks in Belgium during a pilot project conducted with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), BHP and Mitsubishi Development (MDP).

The trial completed its first phase after more than 4,500 hours of operational testing, demonstrating the technical feasibility of applying MHI’s Advanced KM CDR Process to blast furnace off-gas. Assessments indicate that full-scale application could reduce the CO2 intensity of hot-rolled steel production at the site by up to 24pct.

The project will now move to a second phase, testing the technology on gases from the hot strip mill reheating furnace. The work aims to assess carbon capture across multiple emission sources and provide further data for potential full-scale deployment.

ArcelorMittal is facilitating the trial, while MHI provides the carbon capture technology and technical evaluation. BHP and MDP are funding the project as suppliers of steelmaking raw materials to ArcelorMittal’s European operations.

ArcelorMittal Belgium is part of the global ArcelorMittal Group and operates integrated flat steel production facilities in Belgium serving automotive, construction, and industrial markets across Europe.
