Egypt led Africa in worldsteel’s 2025 production table. Ezz Steel is the largest producer, with plants in Sadat City, Alexandria and Suez, and many mills roll rebar from billet. Alexandria and the Suez Canal ports handle imports of semi-finished and flat steel.

Who sets steel standards in Egypt, the mandatory rebar standard, and how imports are checked.
The Egyptian Organization for Standardization and Quality (EOS) is the national body that sets and develops standard specifications.

ES 262-2, for ribbed reinforcing bars, is compulsory for producers and importers. It was first made mandatory by Ministerial Decree 535/2015; the revised edition, technically identical to ISO 6935-2:2019, was made compulsory by Ministerial Decree 223/2021 and came into force on 14 June 2021.
