Who sets steel standards in Bahrain, and the rules for reinforcing bars.

Standards body

The Bahrain Standards and Metrology Directorate (BSMD), in the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, is Bahrain’s standards body and a founding member of GSO. Several GCC standards have been made mandatory in Bahrain.

Reinforcing bars

A technical regulation on carbon steel reinforcing bars has applied to their import, manufacture and sale since 29 January 2022; shipments that do not comply are refused entry. The current Bahraini standard for ribbed bars is BH GSO ISO 6935-2:2023, with test methods in BH GSO 1808:2024.

GCC standards

As a member of the Gulf Cooperation Council, Bahrain works with the GCC Standardization Organization (GSO). GSO’s current Gulf standards for reinforcing bars include GSO ASTM A615/A615M:2023 and GSO ISO 6935-2:2022 (ribbed bars).
