Turkey's Kroman Celik to begin to sell alloy bar in 2002 |
Kroman Celik should be able to begin
commercial production of billet from its new 1m t/y Danieli caster by the
end of October. Initially, the company will continue to cast carbon steel
billets as today, but in the first half of next year, it expects to be able
to extend its range to include semis for tool steel and tyre cord, for
example. Meanwhile some special steel, for example, for springs will be cast. Ultimately, around a third of the steel cast into billets at Kroman is likely to be special or alloy. At present, company billet consumption is around 400,000 #500,000 t/y. Excess production is sold to other companies in Turkey or exported. With the new billet caster, the volumes to be sold on the market are likely to rise, at least in the short term. To mid-September this year, rebar and merchant bar production each totalled around 200,000-240,000 t/y. The existing caster will be shut down once the new unit is fully operational. In the recent past, around half the rebar and merchant bar produced by the company has been sold domestically. The rest was exported |
